It's time for a
reality check. You need to have a clear picture of just how powerful women are
as an economic force in this country. If you've been groping along on your own,
unaware of the overall financial picture for women in America, this will give
you a great place to start your personal financial literacy program.
WEALTH DIVA™ is a web-based
community of women, who all share the same drive
and vision of becoming financially confident.
Traditionally, American culture doesn't
automatically support women in gaining financial
competence. Worse, women draw much of their "training"
from the media or people who are not skilled in
money matters.
Money is a highly charged, emotional topic. Many
women function better in a non-threatening, non-confrontational
learning environment that doesn't intimidate them.
WEALTH DIVA™ encourages women to master and enjoy
collaborative learning.
The foundation for basic financial literacy is built
in this self-paced study course.
WEALTH DIVA™ Teaches:
•
The practical, step-by-step process to assess current
financial status. Some women can't even look at
their situation without paralyzing fear
• How to identify and free clients from
the limiting thinking that is prohibiting financial
growth..
• How to create a financial vision forecast
to reliably predict when important financial milestones
can be reached and the steps needed to reach them.
• The world's easiest debt elimination plan
that works reliably while building financial management
skills.
• How to increase your income, even while
keeping a current job. Learn the best part-time
options that can provide full-time income.
• How to invest like a pro to meet personal
needs and protect money from needless risk.
• The legal strategies the wealthy use to
reduce taxes and increase your ability to accumulate
money easily.
• Building your own personal “Wealth
Team”
• How to secure retirement, regardless of
age.
• How to audit-proof a tax return.
Women are the ones who:
make 80% of all consumer purchases.
decide what bank to use 89% of the time.
choose where to go on 94% of
vacations.
pick what house will be purchased in 91%
of all home sales.
buy 94% of all home furnishings.
make 60% of car purchasing decisions.
are responsible for 80% of all health
care spending.
will earn, working fulltime, an average
of $2.9 million over a lifetime with a professional degree, $1.6 million with a
bachelor's degree and $1.0 million with a high school diploma.
If your parents are seniors
now:
Your generation is poised to inherit $10
trillion in cash and assets.
Since you're likely to outlive your
same-age husband, you will control his inheritance and yours.
If you are
currently 50 or older yourself:
You're among the households who have almost $1
trillion in annual income, controlling 3/4 of all assets and 1/2 the nation's
entire pool of discretionary income.
Statistics about women
in business are as startling:
Women are fleeing from corporate America
to start businesses to get some freedom and balance in their lives while
increasing their earning potential.
65% of those who started businesses in
the past 10 years were managers in corporate America first.
Women start 424 new enterprises every
day. Men start less than half that number. This figure would not include the
hundreds of untracked sole proprietorships quietly started by women throughout
the country.
Women own almost half of all privately
owned U.S. firms. (This includes companies in which women own half or more
interest in the business.)
Women-owned firms are growing faster than
the national average.
Women of color lead in all business
start-ups.
"American women by themselves are, in
effect, the largest 'national' economy on earth, larger than the entire
Japanese economy."
~ Tom Peters in his Foreword to
Marketing to Women (Martha Barletta, Dearborn Trade Publishing,
2003).
This is amazing information, wouldn't you
agree?
And yet women continue to feel powerless when
it comes to money. Like economic nobodies.
To get a
complete picture, let's take a look at some trends in America today that are
putting financial pressure on everyone, regardless of gender or age:
Consumer debt has hit record highs
up 185% from five years ago.
Mortgage debt is up. Foreclosures are up
14% nationally.
Nothing down, 0% financing
is tempting, but the cost of cars has jumped 11% since 2001. And nearly 40% of
drivers who trade in their vehicles actually owe more than the car is
worth.
If you're young, you're likely to be
saddled with a hefty student loan and credit card debt.
If you're older, you may be struggling to
recoup your 401(k) retirement plan that was slashed with the downturn in the
stock market.
In 2003, over 2 million people declared
bankruptcy 30% of those were women filing alone (4% more than men filing
alone), while 44% were filed by couples.
Women earn 76¢ to every dollar
earned by men. This is as high as it's ever been, but the gap still impacts the
lives of both single and married women. The last census showed 36% of all
households are headed by women. And many two-paycheck families depend on a
wifes income to make ends meet.
And if we needed any more reasons to have control
of our own money:
Women marry later. Money mistakes made
early can linger into marriage, causing stress.
The cost of raising a child born this
year to age 18 who will attend public college will run over $400,000 if you
live in the Midwest. Move to the West Coast and a private college, and the cost
jumps to over $750,000.
Divorce still dissolves almost one out of
every two marriages. Money is the leading cause of all divorces.
The poverty rate among children
quadruples when they live with a divorced mom instead of married parents.
Women outlive men by an average of 7 to 9
years, many spending the better part of the last decade of their lives on their
own. But many are widowed long before retirement. The average age when a woman
is widowed is 56.
Women comprise 77% of older Americans
living alone. It is projected that figure will jump to 85% by 2020.
The income of widows drops 44% within
three years after a husband's death, due in part to the loss of the
husbands private pension benefits.
One-third of older single women count on
Social Security for 90% of their monthly income.
Social Security is anything but
secure.
It's time to get a grip!
Clearly, it doesn't matter if you want a quiet,
modest life or an upscale, luxury lifestyle, you simply don't have a choice
about becoming financially literate.
Our goal
is to turn women into WEALTH DIVA™s who think like the wealthy, act like
the wealthy, train themselves as the wealthy do. . . and who become
strong, confident leaders with their newfound skills.
Are you under 30? Over 60? A stay-at-home mom? An
executive? A wife? A widow? Your age and current role in life are irrelevant to
your desire, need and ability to become financially literate.
Are you deeply in debt? Are you working from
paycheck to paycheck? Do you have some money set aside? Do you have a
significant sum of money you need to learn to manage, or manage better?
Again, it doesn't matter. The skills are the same.
You'll simply apply your newly found financial competence to your own life,
current responsibilities and dreams for the future.
Men and women think about money
differently. Men simply don't have or even understand the
"bag-lady syndrome" that can haunt even highly paid, extremely talented women
(such as Lily Tomlin and Shirley MacLaine, who both admit to bag-lady
tendencies).
I believe the bag-lady syndrome isn't just a fear of the
future, but a clear sign that women intuitively know there's something
important they need to know to prevent an impoverished life. So we have to
start with a wealth mindset that actually works for women, then gain the skills
for financial competence.
The way we were taught and conditioned
about money was different than how the boys were "initiated" into money
matters. Not that guys are given any better training about money! But the
presumption was they had to learn financial responsibility as they approached
adulthood.
The culture doesn't automatically support us in gaining
financial competence. Worse, we draw much of our "training" from the media or
people who are not skilled in money matters.
Money is a highly charged, emotional
topic. Most women function better in a non-threatening, non-confrontational
learning environment that doesn't intimidate them. We encourage women to master
and enjoy collaborative learning.
I make it safe for you to come out of hiding,
admit what you don't know. . . ask the questions that have been nagging at the
back of your mind. . . develop the financial skills you need to survive and
thrive. . . celebrate yourself. . . and achieve whatever financial goals you
choose.
This is your very life we're talking about. You
can't afford to be embarrassed into silence and continue as a financial
illiterate. It's your choice to be financially savvy or not and that
choice has consequences.
It can make the difference between
sending your kids to school where you choose and picking the cheapest option.
It could mean the difference between living in a home you adore and one you
merely settle for.
Your choice might allow you to assist an
aging or ill family member, or leave you standing by helplessly.
Financial literacy could spell the
difference between living the last third of your life in comfort, or in
poverty.
And think about this what you
decide today could mean you could more than handle your own financial needs and
be able to throw finances behind a cause you believe in. You could support your
church or favorite charity. . . or not.
Understand this clearly: we already control
an enormous amount of money. Think what we could do if we knew how to make
friends with money, make it grow and then use it for a grand purpose outside
ourselves!
