Entrepreneur Burn Out
Late last year, I was smack-dab in the middle of an over-packed travel schedule, more JV’s than I could count, new projects popping up left and right, and amazing new partners presenting themselves by the boatload – all this while trying to be a good mother to my two kids.
In 2013 all together, I was on almost 100 stages and was away from home for more than 200 days. Yup, almost 2/3 of the year.
Day after day I would grind and grind and grind until it finally hit me – burn out.
Yes, I have a big group of virtual employees, a large in-office staff, widespread international offices…but I’m also an entrepreneur.
As you well know, entrepreneurs have 10 ideas an hour – minimum. And I have a huge issue with saying the word “no” as opportunities come my way.
Entrepreneurs, we’re weirdo’s.
We get this thought in our head that if we don’t do it ourselves it won’t be done well enough. Or that it’s cheaper to learn to do something ourselves rather than outsourcing it.
We have some serious issues going on in between our ears.
I do, too…I plain did too much and burned out.
I won’t lie to you: The entrepreneur life is really about freedom and designing the life you want … but behind the scenes, it can be messy.
I wasn’t my normal, blow-your-socks-off-with-my-energy self.
So, I took some time away.
I had to get away to be with my kids, doing things that didn’t involve wrecking my brain.
It was amazing to get away.
I bounced back with a fierce rejuvenation – just ask my staff LOL.
I learned a lot about myself through this trial, mainly to follow my own advice better and sequence my business according to my values.
But do you want to know the most amazing part, the silver lining, the blessing in disguise from my messy situation?
I had a team to keep things going and running smoothly.
Nothing crashed.
Everything ran as planned.
It was as if I was not even gone.
You do that by hiring the right people in the right roles, and having the right systems in place.
To tell you the truth, I’ve grown this team over the better part the last 20 years.
The main reason was that I did not want to be run by my business anymore.
I wanted to run my business.
Because here’s the stone-cold truth: I don’t care how automated your business is, if you overdo things by yourself as an entrepreneur, I guarantee you will hit that wall.
That wall stinks.
But I’m to the point now where I can take weeks off – literally weeks off – and my business doesn’t miss a beat.
It’s unbelievably relieving knowing I have a more-than capable team to run the ship if I’m out…
Why do I tell you all this?
Because maybe you can relate.
Maybe you have this “Superhero Syndrome” too. You try to do everything, jump on every opportunity, give every single thing your undivided attention.
Maybe you’re just like me and have this ill-advised thought that if you don’t do it yourself, it won’t be done the best it can be (this is totally wrong, by the way).
This won’t work for long.
Eventually, you’ll overwhelm yourself, snap into reality, and realize that even if there were 48 hours in one day, you would still not be able to accomplish everything on your own.
So, outsource it.
Train people and trust people.
Create a strong, responsible, visionary team around you to carry the torch when you have to take some time for yourself – we’re all human.
Learning to have faith in your team is a process, but you’ll get there through finding the right people that fit your values – I don’t doubt it.
Trust me, you’ll be much better off in the long run.
Because what I’ve learned is that when you’re building your freedom, building your team, taking more things off of your plate…not only do you get more time…but you become way more successful!
So, don’t end up where I did.
If you’re on the path to burning out, take a step away from what you’re doing and ask yourself: What can I train and trust someone on my team to do so that I will never have to do it again myself?
Trust me, you’ll be a lot happier once you do.
Cheers,
Serve Out Loud
While recently discussing one of the core principles in my new book, Yes Energy: The Equation to Do Less, Make More, with a United States veteran, I was stunned by his response. “You say ‘yes’ and figure out how,” I said to the man. He was instantly taken back by this. “Say ‘yes’ and then figure out how,” he questioned? The man could not understand the principle because of his experience in the military. He explained to me that you certainly wouldn’t want to say “yes” to jumping out of an airplane and then figure out if your parachute works.
From my discussions with the man, I couldn’t help but feel that there is a larger conversation contained in his answer. Service men and women are regimented and trained. They follow authority. They are governed by clearly defined rules and procedures. They are comfortable in their routine. How does this affect their views on entrepreneurialism? Could this inability to say “yes” and then figure out how be hurting their chances of becoming successful when they leave the service?
Veterans who have left the US military in the past 10 years are facing 11.7% unemployment rate, which is 2.6% above the national unemployment average. With more than a million service members projected to leave the military in the next five years, this number will only grow, unless we can encourage a new conversation – a conversation about entrepreneurialism. Never has there been a greater need for U.S. veterans to create an entrepreneurial economy for themselves.
According to the US Small Business Association, nearly 25% of all returning vets would like to start a business. They have already said “yes.” So why aren’t they figuring out how?
I believe it is the lack of education and support available to them that has contributed to this growing rate of unemployment. Realizing this problem compelled me to launch Serve Out Loud, a resource devoted entirely to providing the vital education and support US vets need to generate new revenue, create bigger opportunities and expand their financial life. Through this program I offer all service men and women a 10% discount on all of my educational tools including books, coaching programs and seminars.
Taking advantage of Serve Out Loud and other resources aimed at arming US vets with the tools they need to start their own business is a must for all men and women returning home from the service. Once we reach out and have this conversation with our vets, I believe they will begin to see that the skills, knowledge and experiences they gained from their service can actually work for them to achieve their goal of starting their own business. And, once they do, the success rate for veteran-owned businesses is higher than non-veteran owned businesses.
More than any other group of people, veterans understand what it means to serve our country. By starting their own business they can continue to serve. It is the more than 28 million small businesses in this country that employ over half of the work force and create the majority of new jobs. Shouldn’t our vets have a hand in growing and ensuring the financial well-being of the country and its people for whom they’ve already fought so hard to protect? I believe that entrepreneurialism is the key to long term financial stability and personal happiness. There is no group more deserving than both of those things than the US Vets.
Are You Ready to FIRE Your Boss?
What kind of day are you having at work? If you are like 49% of Americans, you aren’t having a good one. New York Conference Board just released a survey that revealed that only 51% of employed Americans are satisfied with their jobs. In 1995, 59% of employed people were happy and that was with a much lower unemployment rate! The study went on to say that four out of five workers are unsatisfied with their companies’ promotion policy and bonus plans and three out of five are not happy with how much they are being paid for what they do.
What if I told you that you have all the resources at your disposal to stop working for someone else today? Feel free to quit right now if you like. You have the resources. You just have to put them to use! In my books, I call the order in which you utilize these resources “sequencing.” The parts are the same, but the order of the sequence varies depending on the individual and their unique situation.
When you execute this sequence, you take one more step toward something beyond leaving your desk job, or field job, or whatever you do. You reach your freedom day. That is the day when you look around you and everything is how you want it to be. You are Doing Less, Making More, spending more time with your friends, family, traveling the world, pursuing your passions – whatever you see as that perfect end-state.
Sit at your computer and dream about your freedom day, visualize it. Feel what it feels like. See what you will have, where you will live, what you will be. Relaxing, wasn’t it? Now imagine how wonderful it will be when you finally live it!
I want to help you discover the roadmap to a brighter future. So I’m giving you my Millionaire Road Map for free. (It’s a $39 value).
That freedom day is just sitting over the horizon. All you have to know is how to get to it.
So go get it.
Financial Freedom Is Planned Not Found
If you were to look at actuary tables published by the insurance industry, people whose goal is to reach 65 so they can retire, reach their goal.
However, it’s interesting to note that if that’s their sole goal, they pass away within two years of reaching it.
Why?
It’s because they haven’t bothered to plan their life beyond that point!
Webster defines the word retire as: to withdraw from action; retreat.
And, that’s exactly what many retired people do. They withdraw from life and become reclusive. Part of this is because they have to; they simply don’t have enough money to live on. They’ve relied on the government to care for them in their golden years.
Your Financial Freedom Day
At Live Out Loud, our goal is to have you design your life to include Financial Freedom. You need to design your Financial Freedom Day so you can enjoy your “want to” life as opposed to living in the “have to” life.
Your Financial Freedom Day is the day YOU get to design. It’s the day when you will be able to be financially independent; a time that you get to decide on what you really want to do as opposed to what you have to do.
This requires vision.
A clear vision keeps you on course; it keeps you on purpose. It represents the total journey you’re taking and gives you something to strive toward. It’s your higher purpose; something to which you aspire.
A person with no vision could be compared to a ship without a rudder, wandering aimlessly, never knowing whether or not they’re on track. Most people have an essence about what they want to do. However, they don’t have a vision. Your vision charts your course and keeps you true to what you believe.
One of the best definitions of vision that I’ve come across comes from
Cynthia D. Scott, Dennis T. Jeffe, and Glenn R. Tobe who wrote:
“A vision is a picture of a preferred future state, a description of what it would be like to be some years from now. It is a dynamic picture of the future. It is more than a dream or set of hopes; it is a commitment. The vision provides the context for designing or managing the changes that will be necessary to reach those goals.”
What is your financial vision?
Very few people we know create wealth just to be “rich.” The wealth is a bi-product that allows them the means to do other things.
So what’s your reason for accumulating wealth? Are you doing this to be able to provide some service to the world; are you doing it to build a legacy for your family; do you have philanthropic goals?
You need to be clear on your vision. So what is it?
Let’s get clear. Here’s what I want you to do: In clear and concise language, describe your financial vision. This will include things like, “I want to have ‘x’ dollars every month, I want 3 homes, I want my kids to be set for life.” Whatever your vision is for your financial future, write it down.
That’s the only way you’ll get clear.
Remember, nobody finds financial freedom… they plan it. Every time.
