It’s seldom a day goes by that I don’t encounter a person who is distraught because their life hasn’t turned out the way they thought it would or they haven’t lived up to their “true potential.”
When I ask those people about the steps they took to create the life they want I get one of three responses. They…
- Admit they gave up.
- Tell me they didn’t have a plan of action in place.
- Set unattainable goals, tried to achieve them out of sequence and continued to chase their dreams regardless of how burnt out they got along the way.
Would you respond this way? I have fallen into group #3 in the past. I understand how difficult it can be to want something so bad and to keep pushing and pushing until there is no more YOU left to give. However, over the years, I’ve learned what it takes to become a true leader of my life, the CEO of it so to speak. It’s that knowledge that has allowed me to reach all the goals I have set for myself, no matter how distant they may have seemed when I first put them in place.
When you take charge of your life and become a true leader of it, there’s no one else to blame if things don’t go right. That’s often what holds people back. That infamous self-talk that always asks, What if I fail?
The first step in taking control of your future is recognizing what it is that has held you back in the past and eliminating that behavior from your routine. This usually involves flushing all negative thoughts out of your system and adopting a positive energy that will help propel you forward quickly and efficiently.
Positive thinking is great and it’s something I practice all the time, but it won’t take you all the way to your goals. Action is essential to make your dreams a reality. That means you have to take action every single day. You’ve got to work for what you want.
By all means though, DO NOT think that you have to work 24/7 and forget the importance of sleep to get what you want. To avoid burn out, you must realize that you can’t do it all. To be the CEO of your life, must have a team to lead. This team can be anything from a spouse who will pick up the household duties and kids who pitch in, all the way up to a fleet of professionals who help you accomplish what you need to do so you can Do Less and Make More.
The combination of positive thoughts, daily actions and team support will do more to help you reach your dreams than anything else that you will ever do.
I admire people who have dreams and goals, but if your bar is set too high too quickly, you are more likely to stumble as you run toward them. You need to take incremental steps to get there. It’s far easier to achieve your goals if they are broken down into manageable, easily achievable steps that, when put together, create a clear, solid staircase to the ultimate goal you have set for yourself.
Most people fail because they look at their dreams in the distance. They fail to see the pit stops along the way. However, if they took the time to check into them, they would fuel their energy and passions, making that final destination look ever closer with each re-charge.
Everyone is different. Because of this, each individual’s idea of action will be different. Where some will take a steady approach, others will sprint toward the goal line in full force. You can take action as methodically or quickly as you like, as long as you approach your goals in a manner that best suits YOUR character. Be yourself and you will be the best CEO of your life ever!
