One of the great things about having a small company, and even working as a solo entrepreneur, is that you are in charge of everything. You have complete control; you are your own boss. However, you will find that this brings along with it a certain amount of stress that many people have trouble handling. Often, it’s better to get some help and to build a team rather than try to do everything on your own. Of course, if you are going to be working with others, you have to make sure that you are building a team that’s really going to make a difference.
One of the first things that you have to do is determine what type of team you need to build. Whom else do you really need to make your company function the way that you need? In many cases, you are going to find that you are not going to need to have permanent hires, as freelance workers who work for you on an as needed basis will fit the role better. This means that you will not have to spend as much money on hiring. However, you still have to put as much thought and time into making sure that you are hiring the right freelancer as you would if you were to hire someone for a permanent position.
When you bring people on board your team, you will need to make sure that everyone knows his or her role as well as what you expect. It is imperative that you let them know that they are able to ask questions about anything that is unclear. If they do not feel comfortable asking questions, you can be sure that they are going to do some things that just do not jive with what you need! This would result in wasted time and wasted money. You want things to flow as smoothly as possible, and that means you want to have open communication.
Assess the team to see how they are doing, but make sure that you do not become a micromanager. Whether you are working with employees at your own office or facility or you are working with freelancers online, make sure that you give them the space and freedom they need to do the job. As long as you are open and you communicate well to your team about what you want, there should not be any issues.
