Several additional points- particularly about the the prospective consumer who is totally amped up on emotion and lacking in prior experience. Add to that the business owner who does not have the requisite training in the business “stuff” to help them run their business like a business and not like a hobby. The Wedding Industry is jammed full of people who are great technicians, but lousy business people, leaving it with a high mortality rate and low success rate.

One of the barriers to starting a wedding cake business is the requirement in most states that food sold to the public must be baked in a commercial kitchen that is licensed and regularly inspected by the health department. Cakes cannot be baked or decorated in a home kitchen and a home kitchen cannot be made into a commercial kitchen. Commercial kitchens must be located in a separate area away from a home kitchen with a locking door between.

That said, many churches and senior citizens centers have commercial kitchens where it is sometimes possible to rent space.
