Message from Loral: Think Diagonally
Crazy to say this, but 2013 is almost over.
At this point in the year. either you’re patting yourself on the butt for getting closer to your goals, or kicking yourself in the butt for procrastinating for so long because it just seems impossible to get started.
I’ve said it time and time again: Getting started is the most difficult part for most people.
If it’s not their mindset that’s holding them back, it’s the straight-line thinking.
What do I mean by “straight-line thinking?”
Straight-line thinking is where you encounter a problem and your thought process naturally shifts to the traditional way of thinking. You see one solution, and one solution only.
Case in point: You want to launch a new product, raise funds, or start a new business, BUT you don’t have the capital.
You need $50,000 to get a product off the ground or you need $25,000 to get some office space.
Basically, you’re in the thought process of: I need lots of money to make money. I need to raise big funds before I can go anywhere.
Wrong!
Instead of being a straight-line thinker, become a diagonal thinker.
Better solutions to these money obstacles is to:
- Become the expert in your space for whatever it is you’re trying to sell. If it’s green energy, become the person who people look to for green products and information in your area. Educate people why they need to go green. Once you get into this space, have a voice and become respected, people with money will start to notice you and they will put on the money while you will put on the idea.
- Sell other things to prove that you can make money. Sell information, sell seminars, sell smaller products. If you can’t show that you can make money in your business, people will not give you money for it — whether it be investors or grants. You have to show your ability to make some type of money before people will buy in.
- Posture yourself as a bigger business, even thought you’re really in the beginning. You need to get your name known, with a blog, a newsletter. You want to be a prominent force in your subject matter. You need to be the go-to person for people interested in your area. So get a website up where it positions you as a proven leader. Not to deceive people, but to show to them that you know your stuff. People are more willing to trust those they believe know what they’re talking about.
Overall, you just have to think in a different manner.
Don’t look at making a B-line from point A to point B. Sometimes you have to skip right ahead to point C and fill in B later.
Think diagonally and move your business this way, too.
This mindset has moved me forward countless times when the challenges seemed insurmountable. But it comes along with the YES! Energy territory…I’m not willing to give up just because it seems impossible.
You shouldn’t either.
To find alternative solutions you must first change your way of thinking.
Start today.
Cheers,
Loral
