Building Relationships That Support Your Goals
Loral is always saying that you need to find people to support your life: a maid, someone to set appointments for you, a nanny, and other members of a support team. Often, though, I think we overlook the support we really need – and it’s completely free. It’s the people we choose to surround ourselves with. Mindset is important, but even the person with the strongest mindset in the world would still have trouble maintaining it if they were surrounded by negativity or non-support. Negativity is a drain and you just can’t afford it if you are going to achieve your big, hairy, audacious dreams.
There are several key relationships that can provide you with the support you need to live the life you deserve.
Family: Family is a biggie. At a recent 3 Days to Cash, Loral explained that money is not a topic she discusses with her family back in Nebraska. They agree to disagree and the topic isn’t brought up. Finding the areas where your family can provide you the support you need, though, is very important. Figure out where your family fits in to your overall financial and emotional support equation. Then, enjoy the relationship! They are your family, after all.
Significant Other: Aside from the time you spend working on your business, you spend the most time with your significant other. Whether that person is your wife, husband, boyfriend, or girlfriend, the bond you share with them can either help you achieve your dreams or hold you back from them. How do they support you? Do you get the emotional support you need or are they in a constant state of make-wrong? While you are working, do they support you by doing unexpected things for you that make your life easier? Or, do they put up road blocks? Take a close look at this relationship and discuss with your significant other how they can support you and your ambitions.
Friends: Friends can do one of two things in your life. They can lift you up and cheer you on or they can steer you down the wrong path in a hurry. You can generally tell if you need to weed a friend out of your life. One community member suggested that you have a discussion with the friend and tell them it is important to you to have their friendship and support. Address any behaviors that are not a fit with your overall goals. Perhaps your friends make you feel guilty for working late or they are negative about what you do. Have the conversation. If they respond, great. If not, slowly start seeing them less and less. If they are a true friend, they will support you. If not, then their friendship is not one that will enhance your life and you are better off with them not in it.
Business Networks: You are who you surround yourself with. This applies to friends and it also applies to business networks. If you surround yourself with a network that is active, always referring business to each other, motivating, and providing inspiration, your business will group. If you involve yourself in inactive networks who have meetings but never accomplish anything as a group, it’s a drain on your time and resources. Choose your networks wisely. The Live Out Loud community is a wonderful network of people who are excited to mutually support each other. You can plug into this network at 3 Days to Cash, remain plugged in at Loral’s Big Table, and plug yourself in for life at Alumni.
Whoever you associate with, make sure they are someone who will help you get to the next level. The right relationships and network can make or break an enterprise. Set it up so it MAKES yours!
The Importance of Team
No one can do it all. Unless you have found some sort of magic cape that allows you to duplicate yourself, you will find doing everything and doing it well is an impossible (and stressful) task. Overloading yourself crushes your creativity and kills your spirit. Overloading yourself with things you aren’t good at wastes time and takes you away from what you really should be doing – leading your company, making connections, building your database, and asking for the cash. So what can you do?
The answer lies within a simple four letter word – TEAM. When you activate a team, you have more time to prospect and serve, so you have money to compensate your team for their support efforts. Teams shore up your weaknesses, act as support so you can maintain a high level of quality, and prevent you from becoming so overwhelmed with what you are doing that you feel like you are spinning your wheels.
I don’t know what I would do without my team. I have a calendar team who makes sure I am scheduled according to my best energy. Because of this, I am able to say Yes! to the best opportunities and serve you along your path to success. I have a programs team who makes sure you are served before, during, and after Loral’s Big Table, Selling from the Stage, or any of the online workshops we offer. They help me support you.
One of the key topics I go over in my 3 Days to Cash Workshop is why building a wealth team is so important. See, a team isn’t just people who are employed by you. A team is a support group that cheers you on, helps keep your eye on the prize. That’s why being an active member of the Live Out Loud community is so important for your development – we cheer each other on, provide accountability, and support. Plus, you get to network with some of the most innovative, passionate, and successful entrepreneurs in the world!
So who is on your team? Tell me. If you don’t have a team – get one!
There are no self-made millionaires, only team-made ones.
It’s Not About Where You “Came From”
Let me lay down something for you. The past is the past, the present is the present, and the future is what you are working toward. Getting hung up in the past is about as effective as getting in your car and expecting it to turn itself on and drive you where you want to go. Yes, I grew up in Nebraska on a farm. Yes, my family had very traditional views about money. No, I didn’t let any of it stop me from breaking the mold and forging my own path. My family believed (and still believes) you must work hard for money and there is never enough of it. Do I get hung up on that? No. Money is just one of those topics we agree to disagree about and we put it on our “no talk” list.
It’s not about where you “came from.” It’s where you are right now and where you want to go. Back to the car. Where you are is in the driver’s seat. Where you want to go is the store. What actions do you take to get from where you are to where you want to go? You put your key in the ignition, start your car, back out of the driveway, put your car in drive and GO! When you do something as simple as drive to the store, does where you drove yesterday affect the way you drive today? Of course not! So why should the past, where you “came from,” or anything else affect your drive to succeed?
It shouldn’t! Leave it in the rear-view mirror. That was then, this is now – and where you were has no impact on where you have the potential to go in the future. Sure, it’s a part of you. Embrace that, just like I embrace that Nebraska is part of me. But use it as fuel and never ever let it stop you from achieving your big, hairy, audacious dreams.
You can do this! I have faith in you!
Grab On To Your Dream
Loral speaks often about Big, Hairy, Audacious, Dreams. But what are they? How do you know when you are dreaming as big as you dare? I have a simple litmus test. If people’s eyes bulge a little when I tell them about it or if they tell me I’m a little (or a lot) crazy, I know I have a Loral-sized dream.
I’m always a little baffled by people who are afraid to dream. Now dating, the first question I ask a potential date is this. “What is your dream?” If there is no dream, he’s done. If his dream is something small, I might dig a little. What I’m looking for though, and what I live for, is grabbing on to those big dreams and running as fast as you can to achieve them. My current boyfriend wants his own restaurant and has set himself on a path to get there. Good start.
Never let go…
Loral is pretty up front by saying that circumstances and life will sometimes try to jump in front of your dreams. The key is, once you have grabbed onto your dream, is to NEVER let go! Depending on what life throws at you, you could develop a mighty grip! Yet if you grab onto your dreams, hold on tight, keep on pushing toward them and make shifts in your life to optimize your success, you WILL get there. It’s not a matter of IF or SOMEDAY – it’s a matter of circle a date on the calendar and go for it. It’s yours!
What’s your Big, Hairy, Audacious, Dream? How BIG do you dare go and how committed are you to achieving your every dream? Tell me! Then, take Loral up on her offer to help you achieve them. As Loral would say, you deserve it! You do!
Visualization – It Works Both Ways
Many of you know me from “The Secret.” Although I believe in the Law of Attraction, I know it takes action to make it happen. However, getting that mindset right – wrapped around your clear intention – is what creates the action which results in that success.
An example – When I was in high school, I would run my basketball games through my head. I’d visualize taking the shot just before the buzzer and making it. You know what, though? If I just stood there and held the ball, instead of trying for that shot, I wouldn’t score those extra two points – no matter how often I ran it through my head. That positive visualization, though, got me in the mindset to take action when it was time and succeed by landing that 2 point shot (sometimes 3 points!)
Visualization + Action is a powerful tool, but it also works both ways. It’s possible to paralyze yourself running scenarios through your mind where things don’t go your way. I’ve seen this with my girlfriends. They know they are angry with their husbands. So, they run a spat through their heads so many times that they actually create a more contentious situation. How? Because they are so worked up for it. It’s not just because they visualized the scenario. It’s how the feelings that visualization created translated into action – in that case, negative. In essence, they entered angry and they got angry results?
How are you entering your business? Are you attacking your projects each day with a Yes! Energy, get it done, success is mine, attitude? Or, are you looking at your to-do list, shaking your head about the impossibility of it all, and then taking action by spending your morning considering your list over a latte?
Here’s the long and the short of it. Set your mindset and get started! It doesn’t matter where you are. You don’t have to “get ready” to work. Just work! You don’t have to “get ready” to come to 3 Days to Cash. Just come!
What you tell yourself about your business and about the level of success you are capable of achieving can either make or break you. So start saying Yes! to some positive visualization. Forget about getting ready and be ready with the right mindset.
Now go make some money!
